Quick answer: CarGuard and Endurance are built differently. Endurance sells its plans directly to drivers and handles the contract itself, so one company owns the sale, the claim and the refund. CarGuard Administration describes itself as an administrator: it adjudicates claims, while plans usually reach drivers through a selling agent. On the BBB, CarGuard has an A+ rating and a small complaint file, while Endurance has an A rating and thousands of complaints spread across a far larger customer base. If you want a single point of contact, Endurance is simpler. If you are looking at a CarGuard contract, the most important thing to check is who sold it to you and who handles cancellations.

This comparison uses the companies’ own BBB profiles (checked in October 2026), CarGuard’s website and the federal guidance on vehicle service contracts. We have no paid relationship with either company.

The real difference: who you deal with

Most of the confusion around CarGuard comes from the way this industry is structured. A vehicle service contract usually involves up to three parties: the company that markets and sells it, the administrator that reviews and pays claims, and an insurer that backs the obligations. Our guide to third-party vs dealer extended warranties explains the roles in more detail.

Endurance keeps the sale and the contract in-house. When you call about a claim or a cancellation, you call the same company that sold you the plan.

CarGuard presents itself on its website as an administrator whose job is to adjudicate claims. That matters most when something goes wrong outside the claim itself. Several complaints on CarGuard’s BBB file describe customers being told that refund or transfer requests had to go through the agent that sold the contract, and in some cases that agent was hard to reach. Before you sign a contract administered by CarGuard, write down the name, address and phone number of the seller, not just the administrator.

Complaints: why the raw numbers mislead

Endurance’s 3,559 complaints against CarGuard’s 28 looks like a knockout, but it mostly reflects size. Endurance advertises nationally and has thousands of BBB reviews; CarGuard has 37. A company with a hundred times more customers will almost always have more complaints. The more useful comparison is what people complain about and whether the company responds.

  • CarGuard complaint themes on its BBB file: claims denied under contract exclusions (aftermarket parts, fluids, technical service bulletins), claims held up over missing maintenance records, slow communication during reviews, partial payments based on a cheaper part, and refund requests redirected to the selling agent.
  • Endurance complaint themes, as covered in our Endurance review: communication delays at busy claim times, plus a 2025 class action alleging slow or unexplained claim decisions. The New York consent order concerned telemarketing calls to numbers on the Do Not Call Registry, not claims.

In both cases the pattern is the same one we see across the industry: most disputes start with an exclusion or a maintenance record, not with a company refusing to pay a clearly covered repair.

Plans and coverage

CarGuard lists Platinum, Gold and Powertrain coverage on its website, along with prepaid maintenance. It does not publish full contract terms or prices on the site, so the exact components covered depend on the contract your seller hands you. A powertrain plan normally focuses on the engine, transmission and drive axle; a top tier is usually closer to bumper-to-bumper coverage with a list of exclusions.

Endurance publishes six tiers. Supreme is its exclusionary plan, which lists what is not covered; Superior and Secure Plus are stated-component plans; Select Premier targets higher-mileage vehicles; Secure is powertrain-level; and Advantage adds maintenance. If you are unsure which format you need, read exclusionary vs stated-component coverage.

A worked example with numbers

Say you are quoted $110 a month for 36 months with a $100 deductible, a price inside the range we saw for Endurance. You will pay $3,960 over three years before any deductible. Now suppose a covered repair is billed at $2,800.

ScenarioYou pay for the repairPlan pays
Shop labor rate within the contract limit$100 deductible$2,700
Shop charges $40 an hour above the contract’s labor-rate cap on 8 hours of labor$100 + $320 = $420$2,380
Administrator approves a cheaper replacement part priced $500 below the shop’s part$100 + $500 = $600 (unless the shop agrees to use that part)$2,200

The numbers are illustrative, but the mechanics are real: labor-rate limits and part substitutions show up in complaints against both companies. Ask any seller for the contract’s labor-rate cap and parts policy in writing before you buy.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Endurance if you want one company for the sale, the claim and the cancellation, published plan tiers and a long track record. Read the contract carefully and keep every claim conversation in writing.
  • Consider a CarGuard-administered plan if the price and terms you are quoted are clearly better and you are comfortable with the seller. Check who the seller is, its refund policy, and whether it is licensed in your state.
  • Compare at least one more provider. Our Endurance vs CARCHEX comparison and the list of CarShield alternatives are good starting points.

Whichever you pick, the Federal Trade Commission’s guide to auto warranties and auto service contracts lists the questions to ask before you sign, including who backs the contract and how cancellations work.

FAQ

Is CarGuard Administration legit?

It is a real company with an A+ BBB rating, BBB accreditation since 2015 and 28 complaints in the last three years. The main thing to watch is the selling agent: refunds and transfers may depend on the company that sold you the contract.

Is Endurance better than CarGuard?

Endurance is easier to deal with because it sells and administers its own plans, and it publishes its plan lineup. CarGuard has a cleaner BBB complaint file, but it is much smaller and plans reach you through a seller. “Better” depends on the contract terms and price you are actually offered.

How much does a CarGuard plan cost?

CarGuard does not publish prices on its website. You get a price from the agent that sells the plan, and it depends on your vehicle, mileage, coverage tier and deductible. Get the full sample contract along with the quote.

Who do I call to cancel a CarGuard contract?

Start with the cancellation section of your contract, which names the party responsible for refunds. BBB complaints show CarGuard sometimes directs refund requests to the selling agent, so contact both in writing. Our guide on how to cancel an extended car warranty walks through the steps.

Does a high BBB rating mean claims will be paid?

No. A BBB letter grade mostly reflects how a business handles complaints and its transparency, not how often it approves claims. Your contract’s exclusions, maintenance requirements and labor-rate limits decide whether a repair is paid.
